Happy Wednesday everyone,
This was a really weird week as we had a major movie change it's name after one week in theaters!! Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)opened last week and had a less than stellar opening weekend. In the US it brought in just over $33 Million, which to be real is not horrible and worldwide numbers were over the $80 million mark. The movie reportedly cost between $85 and $100 million, so it is going to make a profit. But as the DC follow up to last years Joker, expectations were very high.
To put the $33 million in perspective, Bad Boys for Life opened two weeks ago and had an opening weekend of over $60 million. So one would've expected a DC movie to bring in a better weekend than $33 million.
Was it the name? The knee jerk reaction that Warner Brothers had was to quickly change the movies name to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. This was probably the uncomplicated name that they should've gone with in the first place. Clearly states Harley Quinn, who would be the draw, but also tells you that a slew of addition characters would be introduced.
Was it the name, was it bad marketing, was it that Warner keeps getting the DC movies wrong? What do you think?
And of course you can view Harley Quinn and Exclusive Birds of Prey merchandise here!!
